Rorschach Training Newsletter, Vol. 3, No. 1, January-February 2011

[A slightly different version of this newsletter was published and distributed via e-mail on February 26, 2011.]

Rorschach Training Programs is announcing a new addition in training materials for students and practitioners.  A new Interpretation Workbook should be available online by the end of March.

This Interpretation Workbook was an idea developed while working with John Exner.  Barry Ritzler and I discussed the possibility of a multiple choice workbook using actual cases to guide students and practitioners through the process of interpretation and he encouraged us to continue.  Over the next several years illustrative cases were gathered, questions were written, and most of the work was checked for accuracy by Dr. Exner.  We believed it was important to be true to the guidelines for Rorschach Comprehensive System interpretation presented by Exner in A Primer for Rorschach Interpretation, Rorschach Workshops, 2000.

With the death of Dr. Exner in 2006 and multiple personal life distractions the Interpretive Workbook project sat on the shelf for several years.  In recent months, at Barry’s insistence, the project was taken off the shelf and work began anew.

Barry has been busy with editing, checking and drafting the workbook.  He developed the format for the information and has completed the majority of the work on the project.  The final editing is currently in process.  Once the workbook is complete, RTP will work toward printing and fulfillment through the RTP website so that internet orders will be quickly and efficiently delivered.

The goal of the Interpretation Workbook is to provide practitioners, students and academic professionals with “real life” protocols to interpret.  The workbook will feature an answer section that will describe why the correct answer is correct and, in addition, it will describe why the different incorrect answers are incorrect.

The Interpretation Workbook consists of 32 clinical cases with multiple choice questions for each case.  There are a total of 160 multiple choice questions to guide the user through the eight interpretative clusters.  Completing the Interpretation Workbook will significantly enhance competence with cluster interpretation and application to real clinical cases.

At the end of the 32 case presentations is a final, evaluation case with all the basic Rorschach Comprehensive System information.  The case is presented with the responses and inquiry.  The sequence of scores and structural summary are also provided.  The evaluation case can be used as an integrated final challenge for the user.  While interpretation questions are not provided for the case, the user is encouraged to ask questions, develop answers based on the coding and structural summary, and acquire an understanding of the individual based on the Rorschach testing.

We believe you will find this new learning instrument a valuable training tool for further understanding of how to interpret a Rorschach protocol using the Comprehensive System.

The RTP email group will be notified as soon as the Workbook is available.
